The art of the long lunch at Layla

There are meals that simply satisfy hunger, and then there are meals that unfold slowly, where the table fills with dishes, conversations stretch across the afternoon and the pace of the day begins to soften.

At Layla, the long lunch is not just a meal. It’s a ritual.

Inspired by the dining traditions of the Middle East, Mediterranean and surrounding regions, Layla embraces a style of hospitality where time at the table is something to savour.

A tradition of gathering

Across many cultures along the ancient spice routes, food has always been about more than nourishment. It is a moment of gathering, a chance for families and friends to come together, share stories and celebrate the simple pleasure of good company.

Meals are rarely rushed. Plates arrive gradually, conversations deepen and the table becomes the centre of the experience.

This philosophy is woven into the way Layla approaches dining.

Designed for sharing

The menu at Layla encourages guests to explore dishes together. Rather than ordering individual plates, the experience unfolds through shared selections that move across the table.

Warm breads, vibrant salads, aromatic spices and slow-cooked meats create a rhythm that feels relaxed and social.

Each dish becomes part of a larger story, allowing guests to discover new flavours while enjoying the collective experience of the meal.

The rhythm of the afternoon

A long lunch often begins slowly, perhaps with a drink and something small to start. From there, dishes arrive one by one, each adding another layer to the table.

The atmosphere shifts naturally as the afternoon progresses. Sunlight softens, glasses refill, and what began as lunch becomes something closer to an occasion.

At Layla, this sense of rhythm is part of the dining experience.

Layla Weekend Feast

The Layla Weekend Feast is a relaxed shared dining experience designed for long lunches and time around the table. Available from Friday through Sunday, the menu brings together a selection of Layla favourites, from grilled bazlama with sesame butter and whipped smoked hummus to tomato and pomegranate salad, lamb cigars and the restaurant’s signature “Habibi” butter chicken served with basmati rice.

The feast is paired with a two-hour beverage package featuring sparkling wine, rosé, house wines and soft drinks, creating an easy, social way to settle in and enjoy the afternoon.

Available Friday to Sunday from 12:00pm to 3:30pm. Price $98 per person.

A celebration of flavour and time

The beauty of a long lunch lies in its ability to bring people together in a way that feels both effortless and memorable.

It allows guests to slow down, explore dishes, share flavours and enjoy the vibrant influences of the spice trails.

Whether it’s a weekend gathering with friends, a celebration with family or simply an afternoon that turns into evening, the long lunch at Layla captures the spirit of generous hospitality.

Because some meals are meant to be enjoyed slowly. And some tables are meant to linger.
